The Summer Leadership Program

StepStones' Summer Leadership Program is designed to provide intensive support, guidance, and training to a population of less privileged youth aged 14-16 who demonstrate leadership potential. Teachers, social workers, or other community workers refer youth to the program. Through a combination of team-building activities, volunteer opportunities, focused games, discussions, and recreational programming, positive self-image, confidence, and leadership skills are developed. The program is approximately two weeks in duration. Successful graduates of the program are provided with a $200 stipend, and the opportunity to participate further in StepStones' programming. This program also prepares youth for a more senior staff role as a counselor or member of the programming team as the Residential Camp Program develops and expands.

In the summer of 2005, nine girls participated in the first Summer Leadership Program. The girls participated in a number of team building activities, created two murals about the meaning of leadership, volunteered to pack containers that were sent overseas to help developing nations, and hosted an afternoon event at a community centre that showcased their talents and baking skills! In addition, they learned swimming and canoeing as well as outdoor cooking skills, participated in a book club, learned about craft activities to teach to younger campers, hosted a talent show, and re-created a day long event modeled after the TV show "The Amazing Race" that took them around the camp property on a number of challenges!
