Position Details

Lifeguard/Waterfront Staff

The waterfront is an essential part of camp life and it is necessary that waterfront staff are highly qualified and confident in their ability to supervise instruction periods, free swim, and canoeing/kayaking sessions. Many lifeguards are also camp counsellors.

Responsibilities: Participating in staff orientation and training; direct supervision of campers and staff at the waterfront; providing aquatic instruction to campers; planning waterfront activities and games; participating in camp-wide activities where appropriate.

Qualifications: Ability to work with emergency situations and rescues; NLS qualifications (current) and standard first aid (current).

Program Staff

Program staff are responsible for the supervision of campers as well as planning and running camp-wide programming activities. Program staff work to enhance the campers’ experience at StepStones, while taking responsibility for their health and well being.

Responsibilities: Participating in staff orientation and training; Organizing and facilitating engaging camp activities; being an active part of all camp activities; developing new programs and activities for camp; supervising groups of campers and staff; promoting a healthy environment for campers; developing and practicing personal leadership skills.

Qualifications: Interested in working with female youth in a group living situation; strong leadership and conflict resolution skills; able to communicate effectively with campers and staff.

Cabin Counsellor

Cabin Counsellors are responsible for the supervision of campers assigned to their unit. A cabin counsellor will work to enhance the campers’ experience at StepStones, while taking responsibility for their health and well-being.

Responsibilities: Participating in staff orientation and training; aiding program staff during activities; being an active part of all camp activities (i.e. campfires, songs, talent shows, hikes, free time activities, etc.); knowing the location of their camper group 24 hours a day; promoting a positive healthy environment for the campers at StepStones; developing and practicing personal leadership skills.

Qualifications: Interested in working with children in a group living situation; able to communicate effectively with campers and staff.

Kitchen Staff

Kitchen staff are responsible for meal preparation and food safety at camp. Positions in the kitchen range from lead cook to support staff.

Responsibilities: Participating in staff orientation and training; working with the kitchen staff team; ordering, receiving and storing food and supplies; preparing meals and snacks according to planned menus; cleaning and preparing food service areas for use; help closing the camp kitchen at the end of the camp season; following all rules of health and safety regulations; participating in camp-wide activities where appropriate.

Qualifications: Experience as a cook or assistant cook; training and experience in cooking for large groups; ability to work well with others at camp; knowledge of food safety and kitchen procedures.
