Catherine’s Story

When Catherine (name changed to respect youth’s privacy) first connected with StepStones for Youth, she was standing at an important crossroads in her life. Referred by her Children’s Aid Society worker, she was living in transitional housing and had recently been accepted into an undergraduate Social Work program.

After relocating for school, she secured student housing and looked forward to focusing on her studies. However, when her living situation was disrupted by legal issues, she was forced to return home. Unfortunately, the home environment was neither healthy nor supportive, adding to a complex set of challenges at a critical time in her education.

Throughout this difficult period, her StepStones Connections Coordinator became a crucial source of support. She helped Catherine understand the legal process and connected her with legal aid services. Due to the emotional impact of everything Catherine was facing, she also helped her access counselling supports.

Beyond legal and emotional supports, StepStones helped connect her to a range of practical resources, including a housing subsidy, an employment program, and life coaching services. These supports played a significant role in helping Catherine establish a more secure foundation.

With the right resources in place, Catherine was able to move forward. With this chapter behind her, she was able to focus on rebuilding stability in her life and working toward her goals.

Today, Catherine is living on her own in student housing that is conveniently located near both her workplace and her school. This stability has allowed her to thrive academically, and she is well on track to graduate. Her decision to pursue social work is deeply connected to her own life experiences. She enjoys working with children and youth and is driven by the opportunity to help young people thrive. Having experienced the impact that supportive relationships can have during challenging times, she hopes to contribute to improving the lives of others facing similar circumstances.

Catherine’s story reflects her determination and the power of having the right supports at the right time. Today, she is building a future centred on helping others, while continuing to create new opportunities for herself.
