Henry’s Story

When Henry (name changed to respect youth’s privacy) first connected with StepStones, his main goal was to receive housing support. He had been navigating a difficult living situation at his aunt’s house, managing family dynamics, and trying to address mental health challenges in an environment that did not feel secure. During a time he remembers as one of the lowest points in his life, he had to resort to staying with friends, moving from place to place with no stability in sight.

Henry was introduced to StepStones through his child protection worker. His StepStones Connections Coordinator helped him find housing, create a budget, and begin building connections. This practical support mattered, but so did the consistency. Having regular meeting times with someone who really listened, encouraged, and helped gave Henry a sense of steadiness during a precarious time. Emergency grocery subsidies and home supplies helped relieve some of the pressure he was carrying. These supports, including holiday gifts and event tickets, showed Henry that he was not facing everything alone, and that he could begin to move forward.

StepStones provided Henry with a supportive community where he built connections, deepened trust, and grew in confidence. Through workshops and relationships with staff and peers, he developed stronger relationship-building, decision-making, and money management skills that continue to help him move toward his goals.

A moment that stands out for Henry was the chance to share his love of cooking. For one of StepStones’ Weekly Youth Community Dinners, he volunteered to prepare a pasta dish for the group. This experience allowed him to show off his culinary skills, contribute to the community, and connect with other youth who have similar lived experiences. Cooking has always been part of Henry’s vision for his future, and StepStones helped create a space where that passion could be celebrated and nurtured.

StepStones also helped Henry take an important step into employment, supporting his first job at a hardware store as a warehouse attendant. This opportunity helped him manage tasks in a professional environment and learn how to balance work and life. He has now strengthened his employability skills and is more confident in what he can accomplish.

Today, Henry is excited about the future. After taking time to work and grow professionally, he is preparing for his post-secondary journey. His goal is to pursue a career in the culinary field and one day run his own food truck business. His vision is to serve quality food at an affordable price, making dining out accessible to more people.

For Henry, StepStones has been a source of support, connection, encouragement, and belonging. It gave him practical resources when he needed them, caring relationships when he was rebuilding trust, and opportunities to grow into the person he is working hard to become.

When Henry thinks about others going through similar challenges, his message is simple: keep your head up, continue looking forward, and surround yourself with positive people. It is a message shaped by his own journey, and by the critical support that helped him keep moving ahead with confidence.
