April’s Story

April came to StepStones with a complex history that included multiple experiences within the child protection system, as well as challenges to keeping her own young family together. Today, she takes pride not only in her strength but also in her willingness to reach out for support.

As a single mother, April manages the daily responsibilities of parenting while navigating systems that can often feel overwhelming. Through her Connections Coordinator at StepStones, she was introduced to another young mother who shares a similar cultural background and lived experience. Their connection has grown into a meaningful source of mutual support, offering encouragement, solidarity, and a sense of shared community.

April has thrived at StepStones in several areas. Weekly Youth Community Dinners provide a welcoming space where she can enjoy a warm meal and feel connected. These gatherings have become so meaningful that she now feels comfortable inviting extended family members to attend.

When April had an opportunity to secure stable housing and re-establish a connection with her birth mother, StepStones provided a rental subsidy that helped reduce financial pressures. This let her focus on creating a secure home for herself and her child, while also allowing her to take care of her mother during a period of illness.

Having recently completed her diploma in Business and Finance at George Brown College, she is now continuing her education and working towards earning a full degree. With support from StepStones, she has also launched a Filipino catering business, drawing on a renewed connection to her culture that has become an important source of pride and identity.

Recognized for her creativity and resourcefulness by her Connections Coordinator, April was encouraged to take part in StepStones’ recent Visual Voices photography workshop. Through this experience, she connected with other youth and developed her technical skills and confidence. It also sparked an interest in exploring additional creative outlets, and she now proudly displays her photography in her home.

April shares that the assistance she received through StepStones has been transformative. From building meaningful connections to securing stable housing, these supports have created a strong foundation for her and her child. With a new sense of stability and community, April is continuing to pursue her goals, grow her businesses, and shape a future that reflects her strengths, her culture, and her ambitions.
