Quincy’s Story

When Quincy was first connected with StepStones, he was at an extremely precarious time in his life. After arriving in Canada with his mother as a refugee, a family breakdown led to him becoming unhoused and without a strong support network to rely on. He was referred to StepStones by one of his teachers, as he was in urgent need of various supports for education, housing, and mental health. Over time, consistent participation in StepStones events, particularly our Weekly Youth Community Dinners, has helped him come out of his shell. These gatherings became a space where he could build confidence, engage with StepStones’ one-to-one Connection Coordinators for support, and begin developing a community that now extends beyond StepStones.

Alongside this growing network, Quincy has taken meaningful steps forward. With the help of our Youth Support Services Program, he graduated from high school in the spring of 2025, celebrating alongside the wide circle of supporters he has built around him. He is now exploring employment pathways, including specialized certifications to unlock new career possibilities.

Quincy has also embraced creative outlets that allow him to express himself more fully. Through StepStones’ Visual Voices Photography workshop, he discovered a strong interest in photography and the arts. He loves being on both sides of the camera and enjoyed the opportunity to work with professional industry equipment. Photography has become another important way for him to connect with others and strengthen his sense of identity.

In addition to his involvement with StepStones, Quincy has started volunteering with the Toronto People with AIDS Foundation, further expanding his community and giving back in meaningful ways.

Over the past two years at StepStones, the changes in Quincy have been significant. He shares that he has developed greater patience and an improved ability to manage emotions, even in the face of ongoing challenges. He remains engaged, connected, and focused on building a future shaped by his interests and goals. His journey reflects persistence, growth, and a deep sense of determination, and he has emerged as a positive example for other youth navigating similar challenges. Quincy’s experience is one of many at StepStones, where youth are making meaningful strides in their education and personal development through continued effort, dedication, and reliable support systems.

In Quincy’s own words:

“I recommend StepStones to anybody, no matter what the situation is; they are the best, the key. I was about to give up on school, and the Connection Coordinators saw it. I had lost myself. These guys saw what was happening and brought me back.”
