When Simone (name changed to respect youth’s privacy) lost her mother, her world changed in ways no young person should have to face. With family support becoming unreliable, she and her siblings were left to navigate grief, instability, and uncertainty while trying to find their footing. During this vulnerable time, Simone experienced neglect, abuse, and homelessness, and she was eventually removed from her home by child protection services. Through all of this, she kept moving forward with courage, creativity, and a deep desire to build a better future for herself.
Simone has always carried a strong sense of purpose. With StepStones’ support, she is beginning to see how the many facets of who she is – artist, budding entrepreneur, cultural connector, and community worker – can come together to shape a meaningful future.
StepStones has been there for Simone at times when she had few other places to turn. When she was homeless, StepStones provided emergency funding and a housing subsidy to find her a safe place to live and keep her housed. Her StepStones Connections Coordinator also supported her with an Ontario Works application, accompanied her to doctor’s visits, and helped her gain access to mental health counselling.
Since becoming connected with StepStones, Simone has felt less alone. With support amplifying her voice and encouraging her interests, she has begun rebuilding trust with family members, strengthening relationships, and becoming more open to support from mentors and the broader StepStones community.
Today, Simone is building herself up and seeing her own power more clearly. A local community market is providing her with a space to sell produce, fulfilling a role once held by her mother. This opportunity is giving her financial resources and an important connection to her cultural and familial history. She continues to expand her entrepreneurial vision by including items such as shirts, totes, and gifts in her space.
Simone’s journey is still unfolding with each new day. She has a keen interest in a massage therapy career and in the healthcare sector as a whole. She continues to participate in adult learning opportunities connected to community work, and she is exploring how her lived experience, creativity, and care for others can guide the next chapter of her life.
Simone’s story is one of strength, belonging, and possibility. Surrounded by people who believe in her and supported by her own determination, Simone is moving forward with purpose, ready to keep growing, serve her community, and build a life that reflects all she has overcome and all she has to offer.
