Youth are supported in enrolling in or re-enrolling in academic programs, maintaining attendance and grades, graduating from high school, and pursuing post-secondary programs. Youth receive educational and employment counselling to help them choose avenues from a strength-based approach, assistance with developing critical communication and financial literacy skills, and opportunities for connecting with industry leaders in hospitality and trades.

Safe and stable housing is crucial to academic and employment success for young people from the child welfare system. StepStones offers student housing subsidies to help offset the costs of rent and utilities for youth who are attending a school program in order to reduce housing and financial stress. Youth Connection Coordinators provide subsidies directly to landlords through the generous support of our funders. We also provide youth in need with access to our emergency food and hygiene banks and offer new donations of furniture and housing necessities.

Education & Employment

StepStones empowers youth through education and employment support in order to help them break the cycle of poverty and dependence on social systems. Through ongoing school and career counselling, academic tutoring, job shadowing opportunities, building résumés and interview skills, and connecting youth to alternative and interest-based education and employment programs, StepStones helps to improve the future outcomes for youth from foster care.
